The First-Year Urban Program (FUP) is a pre-orientation program that introduces incoming first-years to local communities in the Boston/Cambridge area. Students participating in FUP (colloquially known as "fuppies") are split into various worksite groups, and spend a week engaging in service projects with community organizations. They also receive a reading packet of articles that discuss social issues and challenges local communities face, and talk about these topics with small discussion groups.

FUP is led every year by the Steering Committee (Steercom), as well as a team of FUP leaders who lead worksite and discussion groups. Steercom and FUP leaders are chosen by application during the spring semester.

The program fee for FUP is voluntary, so participants pay what they can afford.
